Sparky and the Hidden City

Jordan had expected his summer at Bellweather Beach to be boring. He was sixteen, stuck on vacation with his family, and had already spent three days wandering the same stretch of sand. Then he met Maria and Frank. Maria was fifteen, with thick dark curls and colorful bracelets stacked along both wrists. Jordan found her collecting seashells near the water. Frank appeared shortly afterward carrying a metal detector and an overstuffed backpack. “Find anything valuable?” Frank asked. “Not unless you count seashells,” Maria replied. Frank shook his head. “I don't.” By sunset, the three strangers were already joking like old friends. That was when Jordan saw the dog. It stood farther down the beach, staring directly at them. The animal resembled a husky, except its fur was a brilliant, radiant blue. Light seemed to move through its coat, and its silver eyes almost glowed. “Is that dog blue?” Jordan asked. Frank removed his sunglasses. “Very blue.” The dog barked and ran toward a rocky section of the beach. Maria immediately followed. “Where are you going?” Frank called. “To see the glowing dog!” Jordan ran after her. Frank sighed and followed. They found the animal waiting beside the ocean. Maria noticed a silver tag on its collar. SPARKY “Sparky?” Frank laughed. “Of course the glowing dog is named Sparky.” Sparky barked, jumped into the ocean, and began swimming away. “He wants us to follow,” Maria said. “Or he wants us to drown,” Frank replied. Sparky's body suddenly flashed beneath the water. The ocean around him glowed bright blue. That was enough for Jordan. “Come on.” The three waded in. When the water reached their chests, a strange current wrapped around their legs. A whirlpool formed. Before they could retreat, all three were pulled underwater. Jordan squeezed his eyes shut. Seconds later, he realized something impossible. He was breathing. Jordan opened his eyes. He, Maria, and Frank were floating inside a transparent bubble. Sparky swam beside them, perfectly calm. “WE'RE UNDERWATER!” Frank shouted. Maria stared at him. “You're breathing underwater and that's what surprises you?” The bubble carried them deeper. Sunlight vanished. Then hundreds of lights appeared below. An enormous city emerged from the darkness. Glass towers rose from the ocean floor. Silver bridges connected buildings shaped like shells. Glowing plants covered gardens while schools of colorful fish swam between the structures. At the center stood a gigantic crystal palace. The bubble passed through a shimmering barrier and landed on a platform. A woman in silver robes approached them. Pale blue markings decorated her face. “You followed Sparky,” she said. “You know him?” Jordan asked. “Everyone in Lumara knows him.” She introduced herself as Neria and explained that Lumara had remained hidden beneath the ocean for nearly three thousand years. Maria stared through the transparent walls. “Why did he bring us here?” Neria's expression changed. “Because our city is in danger.” Inside the palace floated a huge blue crystal called the Heart of Lumara. A piece was missing from its center. “The Heart powers the barrier protecting us,” Neria explained. “Someone stole part of it.” The entire city suddenly shook. Outside, the barrier flickered. “Who stole it?” Frank asked. Neria pointed toward a dark trench beyond Lumara. “Varos.” Sparky growled. Minutes later, the dog led the teens through the darkness beyond the city. They reached an ancient shipwreck resting beside the trench. Inside stood Varos. He was tall, dressed in black armor, with glowing red markings across his face. In his hand was the missing crystal. “You don't belong here,” Varos said. “Technically, we agree,” Frank replied. Varos raised the crystal. A blast of energy threw them backward. Jordan crashed against the wall. Sparky lunged, but Varos knocked him aside. Maria noticed a heavy wooden beam hanging from rusted chains above him. “Frank! The chain!” Frank grabbed a broken metal pipe and struck it. Once. Twice. The chain snapped. The beam crashed down. Varos jumped away, dropping the crystal. “Jordan!” Jordan dove across the floor and grabbed it. Varos charged toward him. Sparky leaped between them. His blue fur suddenly became brighter than the sun. A powerful flash filled the wreck. When Jordan could see again, Sparky was standing beside him and Varos had disappeared into the darkness. “Time to go,” Maria said. They raced back to Lumara. Neria placed the stolen piece into the Heart. A wave of blue light exploded across the city. The protective barrier became whole again. Outside, Lumara's people cheered. The city was safe. Later, Sparky accompanied Jordan, Maria, and Frank to the platform. A bubble formed around them. Maria knelt and hugged the glowing dog. “You're staying?” Sparky licked her cheek. Jordan smiled. “He belongs here.” The bubble carried them toward the surface. Moments later, they emerged near Bellweather Beach. The sun was setting exactly where it had been before their adventure. Frank stared at the water. “Nobody is ever going to believe us.” “Then we don't tell anybody,” Maria said. For the rest of the summer, the three returned to the beach every day. They never saw Sparky. Until their final evening together. Jordan noticed something glowing near the shoreline. A blue pawprint. Then another. And another. Sparky appeared from behind the dunes. He barked excitedly. Around his neck hung a tiny crystal key. Jordan picked it up. “What does this open?” Suddenly, the ocean began glowing. Far beneath the surface, something enormous moved. Frank backed away. “No. Absolutely not.” Maria grinned. Sparky raced toward the water. Jordan ran after him. Maria followed. Frank watched them for a moment. Then he groaned and started running too. “Why am I always friends with adventurous people?” Sparky jumped into the glowing sea. And the three friends followed.
