The city had stopped sounding like itself.
No horns blared at intersections. No arguments spilled from apartment windows. No music rattled trunk lids at red lights. Even the trains seemed to glide through the city with less noise than before.
People still walked the sidewalks.
Cars still moved.
Businesses still opened.
But everyone moved with the same strange purpose.
The same blank expression.
The same obedience.
From the twentieth-floor window of an abandoned office building, Trevon Brooks watched hundreds of people cross the intersection below.
Nobody bumped into anybody.
Nobody checked their phone.
Nobody looked angry about being late.
They simply walked.
Trevon stepped away from the glass.
“This ain’t right.”
Tamir sat against the opposite wall, exhausted.
“You been saying that for three days.”
“Because it keeps getting worse.”
Tamir looked down at his hands.
Nothing.
Once, power had practically lived beneath his skin. He could feel it waiting whenever danger came. Now there was only flesh, bone and frustration.
He made a fist.
Still nothing.
Trevon knew exactly what his brother was doing because he'd been doing the same thing.
Trying to summon something that wasn't coming.
Vaelor had taken their abilities away.
Or at least that was what they believed.
Without them, the Brooks brothers had gone from being among the most dangerous men in the city to two fugitives hiding inside a building that had been abandoned before either of them was born.
Outside, Vaelor owned everything.
Police.
Politicians.
Doctors.
Soldiers.
News anchors.
People who had never even heard his name.
They all belonged to him now.
Tamir stood.
“We can't stay here.”
“And go where?”
“I don't know.”
“That’s the problem.”
Trevon stared through the dirty window again.
Down on the street, a woman suddenly stopped walking.
Everyone around her stopped too.
All at once.
Hundreds of people.
Trevon froze.
Then every face turned toward the building.
Tamir slowly approached the window.
“Tell me they're not looking up here.”
Every face below tilted upward.
Trevon stepped backward.
“Move.”
The crowd started running.
Not away.
Toward them.
Trevon and Tamir bolted for the stairwell.
The first pounding footsteps were already echoing through the building.
Vaelor had found them.
Eleven miles away, Blackstone Correctional Facility had become unnaturally peaceful.
Prisoners stood silently inside open cells.
Guards walked the tiers without speaking.
Men who had spent years trying to kill one another now stood shoulder to shoulder like mannequins.
Cell doors opened one after another.
Nobody ran.
Nobody fought.
Nobody celebrated.
Except one man.
In the deepest segregation wing, King Viper sat on the edge of his bunk watching his cell door slide open.
He didn't move at first.
The guard outside stared straight ahead.
Viper narrowed his eyes.
“You planning on explaining that?”
Nothing.
Viper stood.
Tall, broad-shouldered and still carrying the scars of battles most men wouldn't have survived, King Viper stepped cautiously into the corridor.
Every door was open.
Every inmate remained inside.
Viper looked left.
Then right.
“All these years y'all been talking about prison reform, and this is what you came up with?”
Nobody responded.
He walked toward the guard.
“Hey.”
Nothing.
Viper snapped his fingers inches from the man's face.
The guard did not blink.
Viper's expression changed.
He grabbed the guard by the collar.
“Look at me.”
The man's eyes shifted.
For one brief second, Viper saw something moving behind them.
Something unnatural.
Then the guard spoke.
“We know you.”
Viper released him.
The voices came from every direction.
Prisoners.
Guards.
Orderlies.
All speaking simultaneously.
“You are an anomaly.”
Viper slowly turned.
“What the hell?”
“You should belong to us.”
Viper smiled.
“I don't belong to anybody.”
The guards attacked.
Viper moved first.
His elbow smashed one man's jaw. He ducked beneath another and drove him into the concrete wall. An inmate charged from behind. Viper slammed him across a steel table.
More came.
Viper fought through them.
They didn't react to pain normally.
That made things harder.
But not impossible.
He ripped a security baton from a guard and battled his way toward the exit.
Years earlier, before prison, Viper had experimented on himself relentlessly. Toxins. Neural stimulants. Venoms. Synthetic compounds designed to allow his body to resist poisons, tranquilizers and psychological manipulation.
Most of the experiments had nearly killed him.
Apparently one of them had finally become useful.
Whatever had taken these people's minds couldn't take his.
By the time Viper reached the prison yard, alarms were screaming.
He looked toward the open gates.
Then back at Blackstone.
For the first time in years, nobody was stopping him from leaving.
Viper smiled.
“Well.”
He dropped the baton.
“That's convenient.”
And King Viper walked out of prison.
Dr. Imani Cross had spent most of the previous weeks running.
Running between laboratories.
Safehouses.
Military installations.
Anywhere Vaelor hadn't completely compromised.
Now there were almost none left.
The underground laboratory beneath a former pharmaceutical research center had become her final refuge.
Screens covered every wall.
Neural scans.
Energy signatures.
Satellite images.
And two names appeared repeatedly across the largest monitor.
TREVON BROOKS.
TAMIR BROOKS.
Imani stared at the data.
Something didn't make sense.
She enlarged a scan of Trevon taken months earlier.
Then compared it with one collected after Vaelor stripped away his powers.
She did the same with Tamir.
At first glance, the answer seemed obvious.
Their abilities were gone.
But Imani had learned never to trust obvious answers.
She zoomed deeper.
Cellular activity.
Electromagnetic response.
Subatomic anomalies.
Then she saw it.
A faint pulse.
Imani leaned forward.
“No.”
She enhanced the signal.
Another pulse.
She checked Tamir.
The same thing.
Her eyes widened.
“He didn't take them.”
Vaelor hadn't removed their powers.
He had suppressed their connection to them.
The energy was still there.
Dormant.
Buried beneath something Vaelor had placed inside their nervous systems.
Imani began typing rapidly.
If Vaelor could block that connection...
Then theoretically...
She could reverse it.
The laboratory entrance suddenly exploded inward.
Imani spun.
A figure stepped through the smoke.
She reached for a weapon.
“Don't.”
She froze.
King Viper emerged from the darkness.
Prison clothing partially covered by a stolen black jacket.
Imani stared.
“You're supposed to be incarcerated.”
Viper looked at the ruined doorway.
“Apparently I got released early.”
Imani raised the weapon.
“Take another step.”
“Relax.”
“You've tried to kill the Brooks brothers.”
“Several times.”
“And you're expecting me to relax?”
“No. I'm expecting you to explain why half the city looks like they're sleepwalking.”
Imani studied him.
“You're unaffected.”
“Congratulations, doctor. You got eyes.”
“How?”
Viper shrugged.
“Maybe evil recognizes evil.”
Imani lowered the weapon slightly.
“No.”
She approached him.
“Vaelor's controlling people through neurological synchronization. Anyone exposed long enough becomes vulnerable.”
“And?”
“You should be under his control.”
“I'm not.”
Imani suddenly understood.
“The neurotoxins.”
Viper's smile disappeared.
“What?”
“The modifications you performed on yourself years ago.”
Viper stared at her.
“You've been studying me?”
“I study dangerous things.”
“Cute.”
“Your nervous system isn't normal anymore.”
“Neither is my personality.”
Imani ignored him.
“The compounds you exposed yourself to must have permanently altered the receptors Vaelor uses.”
Viper looked amused.
“So poisoning myself for ten years finally paid off.”
Imani moved back toward the monitors.
“I need to find Trevon and Tamir.”
Viper's expression hardened.
“Why?”
“Because they're our only chance.”
“Our?”
Imani looked at him.
Viper shook his head.
“Let's make something clear. I didn't escape prison so I could join a superhero team.”
“Nobody asked you to.”
“Good.”
“But Vaelor controls this city.”
Viper stopped walking.
Imani continued.
“And eventually he'll control everything outside it.”
Viper turned slowly.
“So?”
“So eventually there won't be anywhere left for King Viper to rule.”
That got his attention.
Imani looked directly at him.
“You don't have to like them.”
“I don't.”
“You don't have to forgive them.”
“I won't.”
“You just have to hate Vaelor more.”
Viper considered it.
Then smiled.
“That might be possible.”
Trevon kicked the stairwell door open and ran onto the roof.
Tamir followed.
Behind them, dozens of controlled civilians poured upward.
The brothers reached the edge.
Thirty stories below.
Tamir looked down.
“Bad idea.”
Trevon looked behind them.
“Got another one?”
The rooftop door burst open.
People spilled through.
Trevon raised his fists.
“Guess we're doing this the old-fashioned way.”
They fought.
Not to kill.
That made everything harder.
Trevon knocked one attacker aside.
Tamir swept another man's legs from beneath him.
A controlled police officer raised his weapon.
Trevon charged before he could fire.
He slammed the officer against an air-conditioning unit and knocked the weapon away.
More appeared.
Tamir looked at Trevon.
“We can't keep doing this.”
A familiar voice answered.
“No kidding.”
A blast ripped through the rooftop access structure.
Bodies scattered.
Smoke filled the roof.
Trevon and Tamir turned.
King Viper stepped through.
Tamir stared.
“You gotta be kidding me.”
Viper looked at him.
“Nice to see you too.”
Trevon immediately raised his fists.
“You escaped?”
“You noticed.”
“What are you doing here?”
“Saving your ungrateful ass.”
Another wave of controlled people appeared.
Viper attacked them without hesitation.
Trevon and Tamir exchanged a look.
This made absolutely no sense.
Viper shouted over his shoulder.
“You two planning on helping?”
Tamir joined the fight.
“I still don't like you!”
Viper punched a controlled guard unconscious.
“Feeling's mutual!”
A vehicle screamed into the alley below.
Imani Cross leaned out the driver's window.
“TREVON!”
The brothers reached the fire escape.
Viper followed.
Within minutes they disappeared into the streets.
Vaelor's army pursued.
But for the first time in days, Trevon felt something dangerously close to hope.
They found Denise Brooks inside her home.
Standing in the kitchen.
Motionless.
Trevon entered first.
“Ma?”
No response.
Tamir walked around him.
“Mom.”
Denise turned.
Her eyes were wrong.
Trevon immediately knew.
“Damn.”
Denise smiled.
But it wasn't her smile.
Vaelor's voice emerged from her mouth.
“You continue disappointing me.”
Tamir stepped backward.
“Get out of her.”
Denise tilted her head.
“Your mother has such interesting memories.”
Trevon's jaw tightened.
“Vaelor.”
“She remembers when you were boys. When you were afraid. When you needed her.”
Denise picked up a kitchen knife.
Tamir froze.
“Mom.”
She attacked.
Trevon caught her wrist.
Denise fought with unnatural strength.
Tamir tried to restrain her.
“Mom, listen to me!”
She swung the knife toward Trevon's throat.
He barely dodged.
King Viper stood in the doorway.
“You want me to handle this?”
Both brothers shouted.
“NO!”
Viper raised his hands.
“Just asking.”
Imani rushed forward with an injector.
She drove it into Denise's shoulder.
Denise collapsed.
Trevon caught her.
“What'd you give her?”
“Temporary neural suppressant.”
“You sure?”
“No.”
Trevon glared.
Imani crouched beside Denise.
“It should weaken Vaelor's connection. But we don't have much time.”
Tamir looked at his unconscious mother.
“We're ending this.”
Imani looked at both brothers.
“Then you're going to need your powers.”
Silence.
Trevon stood.
“You know how?”
“I think so.”
Tamir frowned.
“You think?”
Imani looked at them seriously.
“Vaelor didn't remove your abilities.”
Trevon stared.
“What?”
“He disconnected you from them.”
“How?”
“Your powers interact with your nervous systems differently than normal human biology. Vaelor placed something like a lock between your consciousness and the energy your bodies generate.”
Tamir understood first.
“So the power's still there.”
“Yes.”
“Can you unlock it?”
Imani hesitated.
Viper noticed.
“That look ain't encouraging.”
Imani turned toward the brothers.
“I can force the connection open.”
Trevon smiled.
“Do it.”
“You didn't let me finish.”
“Do it.”
“It could stop your hearts.”
Trevon looked back.
Neither brother spoke.
They didn't need to.
Tamir turned to Imani.
“When do we start?”
The procedure nearly killed them.
Imani strapped both brothers into reinforced medical chairs beneath a circular energy apparatus.
Electrodes covered their bodies.
Monitors tracked their heart rhythms.
Viper stood behind reinforced glass.
Denise remained unconscious nearby.
Imani activated the machine.
Trevon's body arched violently.
Tamir screamed.
Energy surged through the room.
Lights exploded overhead.
Imani pushed the system higher.
“Come on.”
Trevon's heart rate dropped.
Tamir's spiked.
Warning alarms screamed.
Viper watched through the glass.
“You're killing them!”
Imani ignored him.
She increased the power.
Trevon suddenly felt it.
Deep inside.
Something familiar.
Something buried.
Something furious.
He reached for it.
The entire laboratory shook.
Tamir's eyes snapped open.
Energy exploded outward.
The reinforced glass shattered.
Viper threw himself behind a console.
Imani hit the emergency shutdown.
Silence.
Smoke filled the laboratory.
Trevon opened his eyes.
He looked at his hands.
Power moved beneath them again.
Tamir slowly stood.
His abilities returned with him.
But something was different.
Unstable.
Stronger in places.
Weaker in others.
Wild.
“We're back.”
Trevon smiled.
Then accidentally released a surge that blasted a hole through the wall.
Everyone stared.
Trevon looked at the damage.
“Mostly.”
Nyla had never been afraid of Vaelor before.
Fear had been unnecessary.
She had been created to obey.
To imitate.
To infiltrate.
To become whatever shape made humans lower their defenses.
Sanaa was the same.
They had met Trevon and Tamir separately, exactly as commanded.
Two beautiful strangers entering two separate lives.
Nothing suspicious.
Nothing connected.
They had studied the brothers.
Their habits.
Weaknesses.
Preferences.
Their anger.
Their loneliness.
Their affection.
Then something went wrong.
They began enjoying the performances.
Then they stopped feeling like performances.
Nyla had laughed when she wasn't supposed to.
Sanaa had protected Tamir when Vaelor never ordered it.
Both had begun experiencing memories that belonged to the identities they had invented.
And eventually, emotions they could no longer explain away.
Vaelor knew.
He summoned them beneath the city.
His enormous form stood inside the chamber where his physical anchor pulsed with dark energy.
“You have been contaminated.”
Nyla looked at Sanaa.
Sanaa stared at Vaelor.
“By what?”
“Humanity.”
Nyla almost smiled.
“You say that like it's a disease.”
“To our kind, it is.”
Vaelor reached into their minds.
Both women screamed.
Across the city, thousands of controlled people reacted simultaneously.
They dropped to their knees.
Imani saw it on her monitors.
“What was that?”
Trevon approached.
“What?”
“Vaelor's network just fluctuated.”
She traced the signal.
Then saw two enormous energy signatures.
“Nyla.”
Tamir looked over.
“And Sanaa.”
Imani studied the readings.
“They aren't just working for him.”
Trevon frowned.
“What do you mean?”
“They're part of him.”
The room went silent.
Imani enlarged the neural network.
“Vaelor is using members of their species as conduits. Every shapeshifter connected to him expands his ability to control human minds.”
Tamir stared.
“So we kill the shapeshifters.”
Imani looked uncomfortable.
“It's more complicated.”
“Of course it is.”
“Nyla and Sanaa have become his strongest connections.”
Trevon looked at the screen.
“Why?”
Imani slowly turned.
“Because of you.”
Nyla and Sanaa escaped Vaelor's chamber badly injured.
They found the brothers before Vaelor found them.
Trevon almost attacked Nyla when she entered the safehouse.
She didn't defend herself.
“I deserve that.”
Trevon stopped.
Tamir stared at Sanaa.
“So everything was fake?”
Sanaa looked at him.
“At first.”
Tamir laughed bitterly.
“That's supposed to make me feel better?”
“No.”
Nyla looked toward Imani.
“You've discovered the connection.”
Imani nodded.
“Then you know what we can do.”
Trevon looked between them.
“What is she talking about?”
Nyla remained silent.
Sanaa answered.
“We can sever ourselves from Vaelor.”
Tamir's expression changed.
“Then do it.”
Imani looked down.
Trevon saw it.
“What's the catch?”
Nobody answered.
“Imani.”
Cross finally spoke.
“The bond isn't something they can disconnect from and survive.”
“No.”
Sanaa stepped toward him.
Tamir backed away.
“No.”
“It could free everyone.”
“I said no.”
“It isn't your decision.”
“It damn sure is if you're talking about killing yourself.”
Sanaa's eyes filled with something that would once have been impossible for her species.
Sadness.
“That is exactly why it has to be my decision.”
Tamir didn't answer.
Across the room, Nyla looked at Trevon.
“We were sent to destroy you.”
Trevon said nothing.
Nyla continued.
“Maybe choosing what happens next is the first real thing I've ever done.”
Trevon looked away.
Imani interrupted.
“If they sever the connection, Vaelor will be vulnerable. But only briefly.”
“How briefly?” Viper asked.
“Minutes.”
Viper leaned against the wall.
“Then make the minutes count.”
Vaelor's physical body was not truly his body.
Imani finally understood that too.
It was an anchor.
A bridge.
Destroying it normally wouldn't kill him.
He would retreat.
Reform.
Return.
Maybe years later.
Maybe centuries.
But he would return.
Unless they destroyed the consciousness connected to the anchor at the exact moment his network collapsed.
That required all of them.
Nyla and Sanaa would sever Vaelor's connection to the controlled population.
Imani would destabilize the dimensional anchor.
Trevon and Tamir would overload it with everything they had.
And someone had to keep Vaelor occupied.
King Viper smiled.
Everyone looked at him.
Trevon shook his head.
“No.”
Viper laughed.
“Wasn't asking.”
“You'll die.”
“Eventually.”
“This ain't your fight.”
Viper approached Trevon.
“That's where you're wrong.”
Trevon stared at him.
Viper's expression became serious.
“That thing out there thinks every living creature exists to kneel.”
He pointed toward himself.
“I don't kneel.”
Tamir stepped closer.
“You still hate us.”
“Absolutely.”
“You tried to kill us.”
“More than once.”
“And now you're helping us save the world?”
Viper shrugged.
“Life gets weird.”
Vaelor waited in the center of the city.
By then the streets were filled with controlled humans standing in silence.
Thousands of them.
Watching.
Waiting.
When Trevon and Tamir approached, the crowd separated.
The brothers walked through.
Imani followed from a mobile control station several blocks away.
Nyla and Sanaa moved underground toward Vaelor's central conduit.
Viper walked behind the brothers.
Vaelor appeared beneath the towering buildings.
Human at first.
Elegant.
Calm.
Then he changed.
His body stretched.
Skin darkened.
Limbs lengthened.
His face became something ancient and impossible.
“You restored yourselves.”
Trevon stood beside Tamir.
“You sound disappointed.”
Vaelor looked toward King Viper.
“You.”
Viper smiled.
“Me.”
“I cannot hear your thoughts.”
“Good.”
“You are defective.”
Viper laughed.
“Been called worse.”
Vaelor raised one hand.
The entire crowd attacked.
Trevon and Tamir exploded into motion.
Their powers returned fully.
Energy ripped across the street.
Concrete cracked.
Vehicles flipped.
But the brothers remembered that the people attacking them were innocent.
They redirected blasts.
Disabled instead of destroyed.
Used buildings as shields.
Created openings instead of bodies.
King Viper had no such power.
Only skill.
Rage.
And years of surviving things designed to kill him.
He fought through Vaelor's servants until he reached Vaelor himself.
Vaelor looked almost amused.
“You believe you can challenge me?”
Viper removed his jacket.
“No.”
He raised his fists.
He attacked.
Below the city, Nyla and Sanaa reached the conduit.
It resembled a massive living root buried beneath the streets.
Black energy moved through it like blood.
Both women approached.
Their bodies began shifting uncontrollably.
Different faces flickered across their features.
“You're afraid.”
“Yes.”
“So am I.”
Sanaa smiled.
“That feels human.”
Nyla took her hand.
Above them, Vaelor suddenly sensed what they were doing.
His head snapped toward the ground.
“No.”
Vaelor struck Viper hard enough to throw him through a storefront.
Viper crashed through glass.
He got up.
Vaelor appeared inside.
Another strike.
Viper hit a concrete pillar.
Something broke inside him.
He coughed blood.
Still he stood.
Vaelor stared.
“Why?”
Viper wiped his mouth.
“Why what?”
“Why defend men you despise?”
Viper laughed painfully.
“You think this is about them?”
Vaelor struck him again.
Viper fell.
Trevon saw it from across the street.
“VIPER!”
Vaelor lifted Viper by the throat.
“You are insignificant.”
Viper looked into Vaelor's eyes.
Blood ran from his mouth.
“Maybe.”
His hand closed around an explosive charge Imani had given him.
“But you're looking at me.”
Viper activated it.
The explosion tore through the building.
Vaelor staggered from the wreckage.
Damaged.
Angry.
Viper crawled through the debris.
His body was failing.
Vaelor approached.
“You achieved nothing.”
Viper slowly pushed himself onto one knee.
“Bought time.”
Vaelor looked toward the street.
Trevon and Tamir were already moving toward the anchor.
Viper smiled.
Vaelor realized.
“You sacrificed yourself for them.”
“No.”
He forced himself to stand one final time.
“I'm dying because nobody owns King Viper.”
Vaelor drove his hand through Viper's chest.
Viper's body went still.
For once, there was no sarcastic smile.
No final insult.
King Viper fell.
And did not rise.
Trevon saw him hit the ground.
His face hardened.
Tamir grabbed his shoulder.
“We finish this.”
Trevon nodded.
They kept moving.
Underground, Nyla and Sanaa placed their hands against the conduit.
Dark energy raced through their bodies.
Sanaa screamed.
Nyla nearly pulled away.
Then Sanaa tightened her grip.
“Together.”
Nyla nodded.
“Together.”
They forced their own energy backward through Vaelor's network.
Above ground, Vaelor stopped.
Every controlled person in the city froze.
His eyes widened.
“No.”
Nyla's body began breaking apart into shimmering fragments.
Sanaa's followed.
Neither woman released the conduit.
Across the city, people collapsed.
Police officers.
Civilians.
Soldiers.
Politicians.
Every mind Vaelor possessed suddenly became free.
Tamir felt it.
He turned toward where Sanaa had gone underground.
He knew.
“Trevon...”
Trevon looked toward the street.
Nyla wasn't coming back either.
For a moment neither brother moved.
Then Vaelor screamed.
Not in anger.
In pain.
His network was gone.
Nyla looked at Sanaa one final time as their bodies dissolved.
“Do you regret it?”
Sanaa smiled through tears.
“No.”
Neither did Nyla.
The conduit exploded.
They disappeared.
And Vaelor became alone.
DR. IMANI CROSS Imani slammed both hands onto her control panel.
“NOW!”
The machine she had constructed activated beneath the city.
A ring of energy surrounded Vaelor.
He looked down.
His physical form started destabilizing.
“What have you done?”
Imani watched the readings.
“For once?”
She increased the output.
“Something you didn't plan for.”
Vaelor tried to escape.
He couldn't.
The dimensional anchor had locked around him.
Trevon and Tamir approached from opposite sides.
Vaelor's body changed repeatedly.
Human.
Monster.
Woman.
Child.
Old man.
Creatures the brothers had never seen.
Faces from civilizations that probably no longer existed.
Every identity Vaelor had ever stolen seemed to fight for control.
“You cannot destroy me!”
Trevon raised his hands.
Tamir did the same.
Vaelor laughed.
“I existed before your bloodline had a name!”
Trevon nodded.
They released everything.
Power slammed into Vaelor from both directions.
The street disappeared beneath the blast.
Windows shattered for blocks.
Imani's machinery screamed under the strain.
Vaelor's body expanded.
Collapsed.
Expanded again.
“You need me!”
Trevon pushed harder.
Vaelor's voice changed.
“I CAN GIVE YOU EVERYTHING!”
Tamir answered.
“We already got everything we need.”
Their power intensified.
Vaelor began collapsing inward.
His enormous body compressed.
Ten feet.
Five.
Three.
One.
Still shrinking.
His voice became distorted.
Then frightened.
“No.”
Imani watched her readings.
“Keep going!”
Trevon's muscles shook.
Tamir screamed through the pain.
Vaelor became a sphere of dark energy no larger than a fist.
Then a marble.
Then a pinpoint.
The entire city went silent.
The point vanished.
No explosion.
No dramatic flash.
Just...
Gone.
Trevon lowered his arms.
Tamir stumbled.
Both brothers stared at the empty street.
Imani checked every monitor.
Dimensional activity.
Nothing.
Psychic activity.
Nothing.
Vaelor's biological signature.
Nothing.
She checked again.
Still nothing.
Trevon approached.
“Well?”
Imani looked up.
“He's gone.”
Tamir frowned.
“Gone where?”
Imani slowly smiled.
“Nowhere.”
Trevon stared at her.
“You sure?”
“I've never been more sure of anything.”
Vaelor was dead.
Not banished.
Not sleeping.
Not waiting.
Dead.
For good.
Morning came slowly.
People woke across the city without understanding where they were or how they had gotten there.
Families found each other.
Emergency crews filled the streets.
Hospitals overflowed.
Nobody could explain exactly what had happened.
But they knew it was over.
Denise Brooks woke several hours later.
Trevon and Tamir were beside her.
She looked at them.
“You boys look terrible.”
Tamir laughed.
Trevon leaned back.
“Good morning to you too.”
Denise slowly sat up.
Pieces of memory returned.
Vaelor.
The knife.
Her sons.
Her face changed.
“I hurt you.”
“That wasn't you.”
Denise reached for both of them.
For a moment, there were no powers.
No villains.
No gods.
No monsters.
Just a mother holding her sons.
Dr. Imani Cross watched from the doorway.
She quietly stepped away.
Outside, she found Trevon later standing beside a covered body.
King Viper.
Tamir joined him.
Neither spoke for a while.
Tamir finally said, “I still hated him.”
Trevon nodded.
“Me too.”
Another silence.
Tamir looked at the body.
“He saved us.”
“Yeah.”
“Think he'd want people calling him a hero?”
Trevon almost smiled.
“He'd probably come back to life just to fight us over it.”
Tamir laughed quietly.
They walked away.
King Viper had lived as their enemy.
Fought as their rival.
Died as neither.
Maybe that was enough.
Across the ruined city, construction crews had already begun repairing roads and buildings.
Concrete was poured into cracks.
Steel replaced what had fallen.
People returned home.
Life restarted.
Trevon and Tamir stood together on the roof of their childhood building that evening.
The skyline stretched ahead of them.
Tamir raised his hand.
Power moved through it effortlessly.
“Feels different.”
Trevon looked at his own.
“Because it is.”
“You think Cross changed us?”
“Nah.”
Trevon looked toward the city.
“I think all this did.”
Tamir nodded.
For once there was no immediate threat waiting in the distance.
No portal opening.
No mysterious figure watching from another dimension.
No voice promising revenge.
Just Ashcroft beneath an orange evening sky.
Their mother was alive.
Dr. Imani Cross was alive.
The city was free.
King Viper was dead.
Nyla and Sanaa were gone.
And Vaelor would never return.
Tamir looked at his brother.
“So what now?”
Trevon smiled.
“We live.”
The two brothers stood side by side.
Not chosen by destiny.
Not controlled by anyone.
Not kings because of their powers.
Kings because every time the world tried to break them, they stood back up.
