The Moonblade of Aeralune
High above the clouds, where the night sky remained violet even during the day, floated the kingdom of Aeralune.
Its silver towers stood upon enormous islands suspended in the air by ancient magic. Waterfalls poured from their edges and vanished into the endless sea of clouds below. Winged deer wandered through glowing forests, small dragons nested beneath crystal bridges, and ships with golden sails traveled between the islands.
For generations, Aeralune had been protected by the Heart of the Moon—a radiant blue crystal housed inside the royal palace.
But on the night of the Starfall Festival, the moon suddenly turned black.
Seventeen-year-old Kaien Veyra stood among the crowds in Moonpetal Plaza, watching thousands of silver lanterns drift into the sky. He was lean and athletic, with warm brown skin, sharp amber eyes, and thick black hair tied into a short, messy ponytail. A faded red scarf wrapped around his neck, and a curved sword hung at his side.
The sword had belonged to his missing father.
Unlike the polished weapons carried by royal knights, Kaien’s sword was chipped, scratched, and unable to hold even the smallest magical enchantment.
Still, he carried it everywhere.
“Do you really think waving that rusty thing around makes you look dangerous?” asked a girl beside him.
Lyra Solenne grinned as she leaned against a fountain. She had copper-colored skin, bright green eyes, and long white hair gathered into two thick braids. A pointed black hat rested crookedly on her head, and several tiny potion bottles hung from the belt of her dark purple coat.
“I don’t need to look dangerous,” Kaien replied. “I am dangerous.”
Lyra raised one eyebrow.
“You lost a fight to a bakery cart yesterday.”
“The wheel came out of nowhere.”
Before Lyra could respond, the festival bells stopped ringing.
A shadow spread across the plaza.
Everyone looked upward.
The enormous white moon hanging above Aeralune darkened until it resembled a black hole in the heavens. The floating lanterns lost their light and fell from the sky like dying stars.
A deafening crack echoed from the royal palace.
Blue energy exploded through its highest tower.
Then something enormous rose from behind it.
A dragon covered in black armor spread six ragged wings across the sky. Purple flames burned inside the gaps of its metal mask. Standing between its horns was a tall man wrapped in a cloak of moving shadows.
The people screamed.
“The Eclipse King,” whispered Lyra.
Kaien had heard the name in forbidden stories. The Eclipse King was said to be an immortal sorcerer who had tried to conquer Aeralune centuries ago. The first Moon Guardian defeated him and sealed him beneath the lowest islands.
The legends claimed he could never return.
Legends were wrong.
The dragon opened its jaws and released a wave of darkness over the city. Buildings trembled. Crystal bridges shattered. Shadow creatures poured from the palace tower and descended upon the streets.
They resembled wolves made from smoke, each with glowing violet eyes and mouths filled with glasslike teeth.
Kaien drew his sword.
“Get everyone to the shelters!” he shouted.
“And what are you going to do?”
“The dangerous part.”
Kaien rushed toward the nearest creature. It leaped at a frightened child, but Kaien slid beneath its claws and slashed through its body. The shadow wolf burst into smoke.
Three more surrounded him.
Kaien tightened his grip.
His sword began to vibrate.
A thin line of blue light appeared along its cracked blade.
Before Kaien could understand what was happening, a beam of moonlight fell from the darkened sky and struck him.
The plaza vanished.
Kaien found himself standing in a silent field of white flowers. A gigantic moon filled the horizon. In front of him waited a woman wearing silver armor, her transparent form glowing like a spirit.
Her hair flowed around her as though underwater.
“Kaien Veyra,” she said. “The blood of the Moon Guardian has awakened within you.”
Kaien stared at her.
“You knew my father?”
The spirit’s gentle expression became sorrowful.
“Your father did not abandon you. He entered the Realm Below to prevent the Eclipse King’s return. For ten years, he fought alone.”
“Is he alive?”
“For now.”
The woman lifted her hand. The white flowers transformed into streams of light and wrapped around Kaien’s broken sword.
The rust disappeared. The cracks filled with blue fire. The short blade lengthened into a magnificent curved weapon with a silver edge and a dark-blue handle.
A crescent moon glowed above its guard.
“The Moonblade has chosen you,” the spirit said. “But its full power can only be awakened at the Temple of Stars.”
The field shattered like glass.
Kaien returned to the plaza.
The shadow wolves lunged.
He swung the Moonblade.
A crescent wave of blue energy erupted from the sword and sliced through all three creatures. The blast continued across the plaza, cutting a deep glowing line through the stone.
Lyra stood nearby with her mouth open.
Kaien looked down at the transformed weapon.
“I meant to do that.”
“No, you absolutely did not.”
Above them, the Eclipse King turned his masked face toward Kaien.
Although they were separated by a great distance, Kaien felt the sorcerer watching him.
The dragon roared and flew east, carrying the stolen Heart of the Moon within its claws. As the crystal moved farther from the kingdom, the floating islands began to shake.
Aeralune was falling.
Kaien and Lyra hurried to the royal hangar, where they found the kingdom’s soldiers overwhelmed by shadow creatures. At the end of the platform rested a small skyship shaped like a silver bird.
A young royal knight stood in front of it.
Sir Daxen Ro was broad-shouldered, with deep brown skin, closely cut golden hair, and a scar passing through his left eyebrow. White armor covered his body, while a long blue cape fluttered behind him.
He lowered his spear toward Kaien.
“That ship belongs to the crown.”
“The kingdom is dropping out of the sky,” Kaien replied. “I think the crown has bigger problems.”
Daxen glanced at the glowing sword.
His expression changed.
“The Moonblade.”
“You know what this is?”
“I know the last person who carried it was declared a traitor.”
Kaien’s fingers tightened around the handle.
“My father was no traitor.”
“That is what we are going to discover.”
A thunderous explosion shook the hangar. The platform split apart as more shadow creatures climbed over its edge.
Daxen spun his spear, creating a circular wall of wind that hurled the creatures backward.
“Get aboard,” he ordered. “We can argue after we survive.”
The silver ship launched moments before the hangar collapsed.
Their journey carried them beyond the borders of Aeralune, through regions that had not appeared on any map for centuries.
They sailed across a storm filled with upside-down lightning. They passed the skeleton of a colossal serpent curled around an abandoned island. At sunset, glowing whales swam peacefully through the clouds beneath their ship.
Lyra guided them using a living map that complained whenever she folded it incorrectly.
“The Temple of Stars is hidden beyond the Forest of Mirrors,” she explained. “We land there, survive whatever horrible curses are waiting inside, awaken the sword, defeat an immortal sorcerer, rescue Kaien’s father, and save the kingdom.”
Daxen stared at her.
“You say that as if it is simple.”
“I skipped several difficult steps.”
The Forest of Mirrors covered an island of black stone. Its trees were made of transparent crystal, and each shining trunk reflected a different version of anyone who walked past.
Kaien saw himself as a wealthy prince.
Then as an old man.
Then as a shadow warrior with violet eyes.
One reflection showed him standing over Lyra and Daxen with the Moonblade covered in blood.
Kaien stopped.
The reflection smiled, although Kaien had not.
“You will become exactly what they fear,” it whispered.
Kaien raised the Moonblade and shattered the tree.
Immediately, hundreds of reflections stepped out from the surrounding trunks. Each was a dark copy of Kaien, Lyra, or Daxen.
The false Lyra raised her hands, summoning green fire.
The real Lyra hurled a potion onto the ground. It exploded into a giant pink mushroom that launched the copies into the air.
“I have been waiting all week to use that!”
Daxen charged through the falling enemies, his spear flashing like lightning. Kaien followed, cutting through illusion after illusion.
But every destroyed copy divided into two more.
“We cannot defeat them like this!” Daxen shouted.
Kaien remembered the frightening reflection. It had grown stronger when he feared it.
“Close your eyes!” he called.
“That is your plan?” Lyra yelled.
“Trust me!”
They closed their eyes.
The copies vanished.
Without fear and attention to feed upon, the mirrored creatures had no power.
The three travelers continued through the forest until they reached the Temple of Stars, a massive structure built inside a mountain split down the center. Hundreds of stone warriors knelt along the path, their swords pointed toward the entrance.
Inside, constellations moved across the walls.
At the center of the temple floated a sphere of liquid moonlight.
Kaien approached it.
The Moonblade pulled itself from his hand and entered the sphere.
A vision filled the chamber.
Kaien saw his father, Tavren Veyra, battling the Eclipse King ten years earlier. Tavren had been tall and powerfully built, with the same amber eyes as his son and long black hair streaked with silver.
During their battle, the Eclipse King revealed his true identity.
He was Emperor Vaelor, the first ruler of Aeralune and the original Moon Guardian. The Heart of the Moon had kept his kingdom alive, but its power had slowly poisoned his mind. He became convinced that the people would eventually destroy the world unless he controlled their thoughts.
The other guardians rebelled and sealed him away.
Tavren discovered that the royal council planned to secretly use Vaelor’s forbidden magic. When Tavren confronted them, they accused him of treason. He entered the Realm Below alone to stop the ritual.
The vision ended.
Kaien dropped to one knee.
His father had sacrificed his name, his home, and ten years of his life to protect a kingdom that hated him.
The sphere of moonlight exploded.
The Moonblade returned to Kaien, now covered in glowing symbols. Silver armor formed across his shoulders and arms. A long coat of blue light flowed behind him, and a crescent-shaped mark appeared beneath his left eye.
The temple began to collapse.
Outside, the armored dragon descended from the dark sky.
Vaelor stood upon its head, holding the Heart of the Moon.
“You carry the same foolish hope as your father,” he said.
Kaien raised the Moonblade.
“And you talk too much for someone wearing a mask.”
Vaelor lifted one hand.
The dragon attacked.
Purple fire swallowed the mountainside. Daxen created a wind shield while Lyra combined three potions, summoning a massive green phoenix from a cloud of sparkling smoke.
The phoenix struck the dragon in midair.
Kaien sprinted along falling pieces of the temple, leaping from one collapsing stone to another. He landed on the dragon’s armored back and drove the Moonblade between its scales.
The creature twisted violently.
Vaelor formed a sword from darkness and charged.
Their blades collided.
Blue and purple energy tore across the sky.
Vaelor moved with impossible speed, striking Kaien again and again. The final blow shattered part of Kaien’s armor and sent him sliding toward the dragon’s wing.
“You are not a guardian,” Vaelor said. “You are a frightened child carrying a weapon you do not understand.”
Kaien forced himself to stand.
“You’re right.”
Vaelor paused.
“I am frightened. But courage isn’t about having no fear.”
Kaien lifted the sword as moonlight gathered around him.
“It’s choosing what matters more.”
He rushed forward.
Vaelor’s dark blade pierced Kaien’s shoulder, but Kaien continued moving. He grabbed the sorcerer’s cloak and drove the Moonblade through his mask.
The mask split apart.
Vaelor’s face was young on one side and ancient on the other, divided by veins of black crystal.
Moonlight erupted from within him.
As Vaelor screamed, the stolen crystal slipped from his hand.
Kaien jumped after it.
He fell through the clouds, reaching desperately as the Heart of the Moon tumbled below him. The wind tore at his clothes. Aeralune’s islands were visible in the distance, falling toward the earth.
Kaien caught the crystal.
But there was nothing beneath him.
Then the green phoenix swept through the clouds. Lyra leaned from its back and grabbed Kaien’s wrist while Daxen held onto her belt.
“I told you he was too heavy!” Daxen shouted.
“This is not the time!”
Together, they carried the Heart of the Moon back to Aeralune.
The moment Kaien returned the crystal to its chamber, blue light spread across the entire kingdom. The falling islands stopped above the mountains. Towers rebuilt themselves from clouds of glittering dust. Waterfalls reversed into the sky, and the moon returned to its brilliant white glow.
Days later, the royal council publicly cleared Tavren Veyra’s name.
But Tavren had not returned.
Deep beneath the palace, Kaien discovered a secret doorway covered in the same symbols that now glowed upon his sword. Beyond it stretched a staircase descending into purple darkness.
A familiar voice whispered from below.
“Kaien.”
He froze.
It was his father.
Lyra adjusted her pointed hat and lit a green flame in her palm. Daxen lowered his spear.
Kaien wrapped the faded red scarf tightly around his neck.
The kingdom had been saved.
But their true adventure was only beginning.
Together, the three companions stepped through the doorway.
Behind them, the stone entrance slowly closed.
Far below, something enormous opened its golden eyes.
